Alexander H. "Alex" Williams, 88, of Bessemer city, passed away on September 26, 2016 at Robin Johnson House, Dallas. He was born on April 25, 1928 in Gaston County, to the late Noah Erskine and Nancy Woodruff Williams.
Alex was a longtime member of Ragan Wesleyan Church where he led music, served on the church board, and was a trustee. He was a former chief of East Gastonia Volunteer Fire Department where he earned the nickname "Smoke". Most of his career was in law enforcement which included Gaston County Rural Police where he was a detective and set up the first drug division in Gaston County, a magistrate, and worked with the Sheriff's Department. After his retirement, Alex opened Alex's Windows and Doors. He was a loving husband, devoted father and very proud grandfather. Alex was a friend to all who lovingly called him "Pop".
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Joan McGill Williams; son, Tim Williams and wife Tina; daughter, Karen Young and husband Karlon; sister, Sarah Grigg; grandsons, Brandon Williams, Connor Young, and Grant Young; and many nieces and nephews.
His funeral service will be held at 3:00 pm Wednesday, September 28, 2016 at Sisk-Butler Funeral & Cremation Services, with Rev. John Harper officiating.
Interment will follow at Gaston Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 1:30-2:45 pm prior to the service at the funeral home.
