Alyce Ruth Oates Spencer Hunt, 93, of Bessemer City, passed away on March 1, 2015 at Robin Johnson House, Dallas. She was born on April 19, 1921, in Gaston County to the late Will Roy and Nell Garren Oates .
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Carl Haskell Spencer and Emery A. Hunt; brother, Garren Oates and sister Lucille Black and their spouses.
Ruth was a graduate of Gastonia High School and Appalachian State Teachers College where she was the first majorette. She earned a master's degree from Duke University. She was a retired teacher and school psychologist with 41 years of service in Gaston County Schools. She was a member and past president of Alpha Delta Kappa Teachers Sorority. Ruth was a lifelong member of Pisgah A.R.P.Church where she was one of the first women elected as a deacon. She held many offices at the church and was still teaching Bible studies. Ruth had an avid interest in politics and was past president of Gaston County Democratic Women. She loved to write and had several published poems. Ruth had a great sense of humor and loved everyone she met.
She is survived by her children, Jane Spencer McGinnis McAllister (Wayne), Carl Christopher Spencer (Kathy), Sarah Spencer Woodard (John); grandchildren, Angela Riddle, Cynthia Lanford, Karah Morgan, Brad Spencer, William Woodard, and Dustin Woodard; great-grandchildren, Jonathan Herscher, Jesse and Brooke Riddle, Clint and Benjamin Lanford, Cohen and Claire Morgan; and one great-great granddaughter, Jaycie Herscher; sister, Jennie Dell Oates Ormand (John); sister-in-law, Helen Spencer Foy; and brother-in-law, Sheldon Spencer.
Visitation will be from 10:00-11:15 am Wednesday at Pisgah A.R.P. Church.
Her memorial service will be held 11:30 am Wednesday, March 4, 2015 at Pisgah A.R.P. Church with Rev. Rick Lewis officiating.
Private interment will be in the church cemetery.
