Edith Mulkey Byrd, P.N.P. 81, of Gastonia, passed away on November 1, 2014, at Robin Johnson House, Dallas. She was born in Gaston County on August 11, 1933 to the late Fred and Fanny Hampton Mulkey.
Edith was a member of Faith Baptist Church of Gastonia and attended Living Hope Baptist Church of Gastonia. She was also a long standing member of the Lorraine #169 Chapter of the Eastern Star. Edith was the past National Pocahontas of the US of America and was a member for 58 years. She was awarded the freedom award. She was the pianist for Faith Baptist Church for 38 years and for Living Hope Baptist Church for 8 years until she lost her eye sight. Edith has written over one hundred memorial services for the Degree of Pocahontas.
She was preceded in death by her sons, Bobby Byrd, Michael Byrd; siblings, Fred Mulkey, Lorene Owensby; Eloise Rhyne, Marjorie Carter, Ralph Mulkey.
She is survived by her husband, James L. Byrd; son, Steven Byrd of Gastonia; sister-in-law, Jean Mulkey; numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 - 2:00 pm Thursday at Living Hope Baptist Church
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday at the church, with Rev. Danny Gardner and Rev. David Gardner officiating.
Interment will follow at Gaston Memorial Park, Gastonia.
