Edwin Eugene Barker, a longtime resident of Bessemer City, passed away on Wednesday, August 3, 2016.
Born Nov. 7, 1935, in Gastonia, he was the son of the late Lander Franklin Barker Sr. and Jeanette Bridges Barker.
Mr. Barker was a graduate of Bessemer City High School and proudly served his country in the United States Navy.
Mr. Barker retired from Gaston County Dyeing Machine Company after 33 years of service. He was active in the community, serving in the Bessemer City area Jaycees, as a scout leader and as a member of the Bessemer City Planning and Zoning Board.
Mr. Barker was a servant of Christ and His Church, and was active in numerous leadership capacities within the United Methodist Church. He was a member of Bradley Memorial Methodist Church in Gastonia.
Mr. Barker was an avid gardener and he enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Barker was preceded in death by brothers George T. Barker, Charles R. Barker and Jerry L. Barker.
He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Martha Huggins Barker; son and spouse Chad and Penny Barker of Gastonia; son and spouse Jonathan and Glen Barker of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; brother Lander Franklin Barker Jr. of Sebastian, Florida; grandsons Ethan and Jacob Barker; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A service will be held at Bradley Memorial United Methodist Church, 1425 West Franklin Boulevard, Gastonia at 11:00am on Saturday, August 6, 2016 with the Reverend Debra Short officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 5, 2016, at Sisk-Butler Funeral Home in Bessemer City.
Inurnment will be private.
