Fred Steele Lankford, Sr

Fred Steele Lankford, Sr., Age 85, of Bessemer City, passed away Sunday, April 16, 2023 at CaroMont Regional Medical Center. He was born June 6, 1937, in Gaston County to the late Herbert Charles and Mary Virginia Carson Lankford.

Fred was a veteran of the United States Air Force. He retired as a lineman from Duke Power. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Bessemer City. Fred was a member with the Bessemer City Fire Department for 49 years. He was a three time recipient of the “Fireman of the Year” award. He was also a member of the Bessemer City Sportsman’s Club. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Herbert “H.C.” Charles Lankford, Jr.; and his twin sister, Freida Sue Lankford Moses.  Survivors include his loving wife of nearly 60 years, Vesta Jones Lankford, sons, Fred Lankford, Jr., with his son, Steele Lankford; and Brent Lankford (Lisa), and their son, Carson Lankford; brother, Bill Lankford; sisters, Sara Carpenter, and Mary Lankford.  

His family will receive friends from 1:00 PM to 1:45 PM, on Wednesday, April 19, 2023, at First Baptist Church, Bessemer City in the church sanctuary. 

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM at First Baptist Church with Rev. Olin S. Byrum III officiating.  

Interment will follow at Bessemer City Memorial Cemetery.
