Gene Looney, 83, of Bessemer city, passed away on January 20, 2016 at Caromont Regional Medical Center, Gastonia. He was born on August 4, 1932 in Itasca, Texas, to the late Clifford Odell and Maudie West Looney.
Gene was a veteran of the United States Air Force and he served in the Korean War. Before moving to Bessemer City he was a court reporter at the Randolph County Court House in Elkins, West Virginia for 16 years and later retired from Gaston College.. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Bessemer City, member of the Piedmont Day Lily Club, enjoyed baking and was known as the Cookie Man.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Rose Odom and Dell Jackson.
He is survived by his wife, Jewel Jackson Looney; son, Travis Kent and wife Kimberly of Gastonia; daughter, Carol Renee Beale and husband Tony of Stanley; grandchildren, Jessica and Ian MacPhee, Angie and Jason Dellinger, Alan and Ali Beale; 8 great-grandchildren
His funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm Monday, January 25, 2016, at First Baptist Church with Rev. Tom Ravan and Rev. Walter Prescott officiating.
Interment will follow in Westview Gardens, Bessemer City.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 - 2:00 pm Monday, January 25, 2016 at the church.
