Helen Smith

Helen Caroline Smith, 90, of Linden, Tennessee passed away May 28, 2016 at Perry County Nursing Home. She was born on January 4, 1926 in Manhattan, Kansas to the late Henry Otto, Sr. and Maida Elsie Schultz. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Kansas State University. In the early 1950's she lived in Japan while her late husband Herbert served for the U.S. State Department. She was a retired medical technologist. She was a decades long member of the Church of the Nazarene in both Arlington, VA and Kings Mountain, NC and a faithful member of the choir. She was fiercely independent, unselfishly generous and a sweet person who loved Jesus and was proud of her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by sons Dr. Kent D. Ford and wife Leona of St. Helena Island, SC, Dr. Jeffrey G. Smith and wife Lisa of Dickson, TN, and Michael A. Smith and wife Lilia of Fairfax, VA; grandchildren Taylor Ford of Arlington, VA, and Sarah and Anna Smith of Nashville, TN; nephews Harry Hogueland of Port Chester, NY, Henry Otto III of Manhattan, KS, and niece Carolyn "Greeba" Ginter of Colorado Springs, CO.

She was preceded in death by siblings, Eleanor Otto Hogueland of Rye, NY and Harry Otto of Manhattan, KS; first husband Herbert Wilson Ford of Hughesville, MD; second husband James R. Smith of Washington, D.C., and nephew Robert Hogueland of Rye, NY.

The family will receive friends at Sisk-Butler Funeral Home in Bessemer City, NC on Saturday, June 4th from 1-2 p.m. The funeral will follow at 2 p.m. at the Sisk-Butler Funeral Chapel and will be conducted by Rev. Michael Daughrity. Interment will immediately follow at Huffman Family Cemetery in Blacksburg, SC.
