Early Thursday morning, June 2, 2022, Norma Jean Surratt Clouse was welcomed into the arms of her savior. She was just shy of her 89th birthday, which was June 24, 1933, in Salisbury, NC. Jean grew up and spent the majority of her adult life in Bessemer City. She was currently a resident at Courtland Terrace. She is proceeded in death by her husband of 52 years Robert Eugene Clouse, her parents Charles, and Ethyl Carpenter Surratt; sisters, Mary Hager and Joyce Neal, and nieces, Vickie Grigg and Debbie Hager. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Kathy Bumgardner, and husband Steve; grandson, Christopher Bumgardner all of Bessemer City; grandson, David Bumgardner of Raleigh, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Jean and Robert traveled to many destinations in the U.S. usually with one or both their mothers along for the trip. She was active in the Degree of Pocahontas and served as Great Pocahontas at one point. She worked at Central Drug in her early days. She also worked as a server at Helen’s restaurant, a bookkeeper for MA Rhyne dairy, and at Gaston County Board of Elections. She was a lifetime member of First Baptist Church, Bessemer City.
Visitation will be held at Sisk-Butler Funeral Home, Bessemer City on Sunday, June 5, 2022, at 3:00 PM to 3:45 PM followed by the service at 4:00 PM at Sisk-Butler Chapel, officiated by Pastor Olin Byrum, III.
A private graveside will be held Monday, June 6, 2022.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to First Baptist Church, Bessemer City or Gaston Hospice.
The family expresses love and thanks to the staff of Courtland Terrace and Gaston Hospice for the loving care provided during Jean’s illness.
