Nellie McDonald Hughes, age 87, passed away on Monday, January 22, 2018 at home, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on October 4, 1930 in Newberry, SC, daughter to the late Cora Lee Bailey and Charlie "Mack" McDonald.
Nellie was a member of Christ United Methodist Church. She was Worthy Matron of The Eastern Star and was also named Insurance Woman of the Year. She did volunteer work for Hospice and Life Enrichment Center of Kings Mountain. She enjoyed her grandchildren and great grandies. Nellie wore many different hats, such as "mom", "Grandma", "Maw Maw", Granny, Caregiver, Friend, and Mentor. She knew no stranger, and everyone was welcome at her table.
In addition to her parent, she was predeceased in death by her brothers, George and CA McDonald, and her husband of 22 years D.C. Hughes.
She is survived by her 3 children; Kay Frye Sparrow, of Gastonia, Major Timothy L. Frye (Rosanna Hartman), of Indianapolis, IN, David S. Frye (Lyn Main) of Woodstock, Ga. Her grandchildren; James L. Sparrow (Elizabeth Bell) of Gastonia, NC, Judith Sparrow Dobies (Dr. James C. Dobies) of Belmont, NC, Christine Frye Uhl (Dr. Tim Uhl) of Lexington KY, Jessica Frye Falls (Brad Falls) of Woodstock GA, Megan Frye Saal (Stephen Saal) of Paris, France.
Her great grandchildren, Tommy Dobies, Huston Dobies, Leo Dobies, and Addie Falls, her sisters in law Shirley Hughes Oliver of Shelby, NC and Clara Hughes and Betty Hughes both of Kings Mountain; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Nellie's life will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday January 27th, 2018 at Mountain Rest Cemetery, Kings Mountain with Pastor Vernon Craig and Pastor Matt Morris officiating.
The family will receive friends after the service at the graveside.
