Patti Lee Mauney Riggs, 63, of Gastonia, passed away on Sunday, June 4, 2023.
The daughter of the late Kenneth (Bus) Mauney and Rebecca (Becky) Splawn Mauney, she was born September 18, 1959, in Gaston County.
In January of 2022 she was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer and after exhausting all treatment options and fighting so hard, she decided to forgo further treatment and transitioned into Hospice care.
She was surrounded by family and close friends at the time of her passing. We had some of her favorite music playing, Tina Turner and Bob Seger and while we were talking about younger years and sharing funny stories, she quietly slipped away, hearing us laughing and carrying on about better times.
She passed away how she had lived, simply and quietly.
After her diagnosis she was asked if she wanted to share the news with other family and friends and she said no, she didn’t want all of the fuss.
She didn’t live a flashy life and enjoyed spending time at home, at the beach, with friends and family, and could not turn down a good clearance sale, yard sale or thrift store. Her wardrobe and home décor were ever changing. I cannot imagine how many favors she owned people for helping her pick up new furniture finds and hauling off what she was replacing.
Similar to Tina Turner, her favorite singer, Patti made her own way in life. She worked hard, was crafty and lived life in the way best suited her.
With Tina Turner’s recent passing, I came across an article and quote that I thought of after Patti, my mother, passed away. Tina was interviewed and asked if she felt she deserved all that she had achieved in her life, primarily the very lavish French estate she resided in and she coyly replied, “I deserve more”.
Momma, you too, deserve more.
Patti is survived by her daughter, Amanda Riggs; siblings Wayne Mauney and wife Janet, Cindy Black, Reid Mauney, and Teresa Fried and husband Glenn; and a cat named Fred.
I want to thank our family members Cindy, TC, Glenn, and Reid of whom I could not have given her the care she needed and deserved. The gratitude Patti and I have for the support you all have given can never be matched or repaid.
A very special thank you to a longtime friend Cheryl Mills for being a big part of her and my life, being an amazing friend and always stepping in to help and being there for her no matter what was going on or what was needed, and to new friend Linda Soles.
The family would also like to thank the Gaston Hospice staff and The Greens at Gastonia staff for their help and guidance and to all her other loving family, friends, and neighbors who have reached out to and helped us.
Patti's family will receive friends from 2:00 PM to 2:45 PM at Sisk-Butler Funeral Home on Monday, June 12, 2023.
Memorial Services will be held at 3:00 PM at the funeral home with Reverend Sarah Watkins Davis officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Gaston Hospice, 2240 Remount Rd, Gastonia, NC 28054.
