Rose Marie McDaniel Smith, 96, passed away on Monday December 10, 2018 at Morningside Assisted Living, Gastonia. She was born January 10, 1922, in Kannapolis, N.C. to the late John Henry and Minnie Wilson McDaniel. Her life exemplified the love of God and a willingness to be a beacon of Christ's light for others.
For all who knew Rose Smith during her 96 years, her kindness, gratitude and gentle spirit will be remembered. She was steadfast in her journey as a pastor's wife with Hoover Smith, her encouragement and love for all members of her family and her unwavering faith that she lived every day.
Rose was preceded in death by her loving husband of 66 years, Reverend Hoover Emerson Smith; infant daughter, Delores Elaine Smith; brothers, Ralph and "Buck" McDaniel; sisters, Mildred Pickrel and Emma Lee Staley.
She is survived by her children, Beverly Smith Patnaik (Pradeep), Tim Smith (Mary); grandchildren, Raj Patnaik (Lee), Peter Patnaik (Megan), Austin Smith (Emily), Graham Smith (Kelsey) and Hannah Cox; great-grandchildren are Reed, Anna Neil and Collins Patnaik, Arya Cox, Harriet McNeil, Parker and Coleman Smith, Carter Smith; sisters, Henrietta Tallardy and Bobby Shoemaker.
A Celebration of Rose's life, officiated by Rev. Kenny Johnston, Rev. Barry McKinnon, and Rev. Jerry Lumston, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, December 13, 2018 at First Wesleyan Church, Gastonia.
Her family will receive friends from 9:30 to 10:45 prior to the service at the church.
Interment will be held at 2:30 p.m. at Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis, N.C., officiated by Dr. Hank Williams.
Pallbearers are Butch Adams, Danny Garrett, Hannah Smith Cox, Peter Patnaik, Raj Patnaik, Austin Smith and Graham Smith.
Honorary Pallbearers are members of the New Life Sunday School Class
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to World Hope International, PO Box 743794, Atlanta, GA 30374 (memo line: Hoover Walk in memory of Rose Smith). Online giving at Worldhope.org/give; select "dedicate this donation" and enter 'Rose Smith'. The Hoover Walk was established to honor the contributions of Hoover Smith to the field of missions. These contributions will be used to build wells in Africa to provide clean water.
