Vada Abernathy

Bessemer City, North Carolina

Vada Payne Abernathy, 96, of Bessemer City, passed away on August 24, 2015 at home. She was born on October 10, 1918 in Gaston County to the late James Ira and Minnie Huffstickler Payne.

She was preceded in death by her husband, David Gamble Abernathy; son, David Neil Abernathy; brothers, Avery Payne, James H. Payne.

Vada and her husband David owned and operated Abernathy Grocery and Market in Bessemer City. She was retired with forty years of service from Southern Bell Telephone Company and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. Vada was a member of Garrison Memorial ARP Church where she was a member of the Women's Circle.
She was a caring and loving person who always lent a helping hand. She loved her cats and her family.

She was survived by her daughter-in-law, Sandra Abernathy; grandson, David Shawn Abernathy and wife Heather; granddaughter, Tangela Abernathy Chupp; great-granddaughters, Morgan Olivia Chupp, Emma Grace Chupp, Madison Nicole Justice; great-grandson, David Christian Abernathy,

Her funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Friday, August 28, 2015 at Sisk-Butler Funeral & Cremation Services, Bessemer City with Rev. Dick Whitener officiating.

Interment will follow in Bessemer City Memorial Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 pm Thursday, August 27, 2015 at the funeral home.
