Virginia Ruth Compton Bernard, 90, passed away peacefully at Terrace Ridge Assisted Living, Gastonia, on December 26, 2016. She was born on June 29, 1926 in Greene County, TN, to the late Everett Ivan and Mary Viola Crawford Compton.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Homer Bernard, and her brother and sister-in-law, Ralph and Ethel Compton.
Virginia was a member of Bessemer City First Baptist Church for over 50 years where she was a teacher, GA leader, Vacation Bible School teacher, choir member and a member of the music committee. She was retired from Gaston County Schools after 20 years as a teachers aide. She loved to travel, line-dance and do crossword puzzles. Her family would like to thank Dee Nordan for being such a devoted friend and caregiver of Virginia.
Left to cherish her memories are her daughters, Patricia Bernard Stover and husband Nick of Shelby, Pamela Bernard McCall and husband Joseph of Mebane, NC, and Sandra Paulette Bernard of Greensboro; brother, Rudolph Compton and wife Rusty of Kingsport, TN; grandchildren, Elijah McCall and wife Mariana of Emeryville, CA, and Daniel McCall of Raleigh; and a number of cousins, nieces and nephews.
Her funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, December 31, 2016 at First Baptist Church, Bessemer City, with Rev. Steve Weaver and Rev. Tom Ravan officiating.
The family will receive friends from 10 to 10:45 am prior to the service in the Family Life Center of the church.
Interment will follow at Bessemer City Memorial Cemetery.
